Learning can be a process of trial and error, and teaching can be the same way. The best way to figure out if your lesson will work is to try it–so that’s what I did last weekend. I gathered four friends who generously donated their time, and we had a class together. One of them is Japanese, and the others all have experience living in Japan for several years. This way I could get an idea of what kind of book art will be produced by my target groups in Japan.

I was really amazed and pleased with the earnestness and enthusiasm they applied to their work. They were completely absorbed in making their books, and the room was filled with that beautiful silence of intense focus.

And I am so proud of the books they made! For people who have never really ventured into book arts before, their books showed such creativity and thoughtfulness. I’ll be posting a more in-depth look at the individual books so stay tuned!
